What exactly shows up on a credit report?

dimax g asked:

My mom has been thinking of buying a car from the dealer. I know they check your credit and was wondering what exactly shows up on a credit report and if they show you the stuff that shows up?

If you pay for the credit report it belongs to you. They will give you a copy.

Basically it is your financial life for the last 10 years.

Everything you have on an open charge account, credit card, or loan shows up, including credit limits, balances and payment history…

Many car dealers say they can tell a person’s life story just by looking at their credit report, and it’s true. It will show, first, your credit score, then your address and any past addresses. Then it will show any filed employment. It shows if you have any collections, settlements, judgements, bankruptcies, reposessions, child support negligence, or fraud activity right on top. Then in the main part it will list every single account you have had in the past years, up to 10 years depending on the status of the account. Things like cell phone bills and utility bills aren’t normally on credit reports, but any car loans, credit cards, student loans, store cards, home loans, basically any type of loan or credit you’ve had in your life goes on that report. It will then show the status of that account and its rating per the loan institution, as well as how many times you’ve been 30,60, or 90 days or more late on your bill. It will tell if you have had a charge-off, settlement, account closed for whatever reason, and what your current balance and payoff are on those accounts. I would highly recommend your mom go to. It’s a website sponsored by the gov’t that lets every american citizen see their credit reports (not including score, unless you want to pay for it) from all three credit bureaus for free, once a year. It’s not like those other sites that make you sign up for credit monitoring for the “free” report. This is actually straight from the government to protect identity theft, but it will show you everything a car dealer will see, down to the account and whether you paid on time each and every month you had the account. It also allows you to easily file a dispute if you see anything that isn’t right on there.

I’ve found some helpful info here too:

    All the best to you.
